Fostering Joy and Community Cohesion

“In times of darkness, there will also be singing.”

In Camden, extremes of wealth and poverty exist side by side, but no neighbourhood can be defined solely by its challenges.  Residents leading projects on their estates, youth centres and faith groups working together, long-standing community collaborations responding to crises and creating change - for decades, community action has been at the heart of the borough.

However, community action is about more than responding to deficits and crises. Joy itself can be a form of resistance, a way to bring people together, build cohesion, and celebrate difference. Over the past five years, through the We Make Camden Kit, residents have been awarding small grants to citizen grantees and grassroots groups in the borough to bring their visions of joy to life. These projects show that moments of connection, learning, and creativity are as important to community-building as addressing things like the rising cost of living.

Crossword Lyric is a project funded by our resident panel, supporting confidence, connection, and creative expression through open mics and writing workshops.

And acts of joyful community-building in a multicultural borough like Camden also often become a celebration of its diversity. After all, this is a place that prides itself on being a “borough of sanctuary”. One which made me - a supposed outsider by some definitions, feel so welcome and at-home through every community Iftar I’ve attended, every women’s day celebration, every church supper club, and every conversation with residents in my own mother tongue.

At a time when political rhetoric is often more divisive than unifying, and pitting communities against each other can be seen as an easier electoral strategy than strengthening community ties, being intentionally inclusive and building bridges across difference matters more than ever. In this same spirit, the Camden Giving Alumni programme is focused on connecting residents across the borough. Our panels, events, and workshops bring people together over food, craft, and conversations while making important decisions about their borough - often with neighbours who may have never met before in their lives. We aim to hold space for differences and disagreements, while upholding every individual’s right to dignity and respect, and fostering familiarity in ways that can counter polarisation.

Camden Giving Alumni Meet-Up

Whether it’s making portraits, participating in a panel discussion, learning about a new faith or culture, or breaking bread with others - these joyful experiences can make people around us feel less strange, and more human. Through the Alumni programme, we are committed to creating more such opportunities for interfaith and cross-cultural dialogue that celebrate Camden’s rich diversity, nurture connections, and strengthen the social fabric of our communities.

Because even in challenging times, we believe that joy can connect, uplift and remind us of the power of community.
